About Ben

I'm a composer, producer and engineer of music. I've been making music with computers since around 2000. I earned a degree in Audio Engineering in 2003 and I've been using those skills as much as possible since. I also play piano like a madman and dabble in banjo. My other main endeavor is writing for and maintaining the site MakeshiftMusician.com, a site dedicated to sharing the knowledge of learnin, playing, writing and recording music with everyone, including non-musicians.

After graduating from college, I moved to California and through sheer luck, landed a job at the illustrious Google as a computer hardware technician. Now I can fix computer problems like a pro, navigate my way through corporate hierarchy and be pretentious all at once. After 2½ years there, I left the company and am now pursuing composing and producing as a career.

I write music mostly on a Yamaha Motif ES6 keyboard workstation, and record onto an iMac using Cubase software. I also have an old but incredibly reliable Korg ES-1 drum machine and a fancy new Novation Xio synthesizer. I also occasionally write on a portable Yamaha qy70 workstation, which actually sounds better than you might expect from something so small.

In addition to writing music, I draw stuff, write stuff, can do a rudimentary amount of html and css, hike (sometimes), play videogames, dabble in game design theory, record sounds, and study anthropology.

Go to the music page to hear free music that I've written and produced. The writings section contains stuff I write, like reviews of obscure games or my guide to being funny. The projects section is where you can go to learn about what professional projects I'm doing as well as listen to demos of my work, in case you're interested.
